Asian Hornet in attack on hive

This video of an Asian Hornet attack on honey bee hives is both fascinating and horrifying. It reminds us to remain vigilant for the appearance of this invasive species if we should see it in our area.

The fastest way to make an accurate report of a sighting is through the Asian Hornet Watch app. Why not download the app today?

For Apple phones

The video was made by Eric Darrouzet from the University of Tours. It shows the level of hornet activity in France outside honey bee colonies in both a managed colony and a wild/feral colony.

The consequences of an attack by Asian Hornets can be absolutely devastating.

Romford’s teaching apiary gets much needed makeover

Romford Beekeepers held a working day on Saturday 16 February as part of the project to resurface the teaching apiary.

The surface had become heavy and uneven underfoot, particularly when carrying bee boxes.

This was the first stage of improvements, to spread and bed down a layer of sharp sand. At least one further work party is needed to spread soil, with a third proposed to lay some turf.

There are six hives at the teaching apiary and the bees behaved impeccably throughout this ‘disturbance’.

Click HERE for a short video of the volunteers firming up the sand. Or dancing – you decide.
